Fast forward, pause and spinning pencils all at once
My life is a mix tape.
It is full of songs, some that I love, really love, mixed with some that I am sick of, some I never want to hear again and some that are just meh.
It plays constantly, so that even the songs I love become just a bit in the middle of meh.
I play it on fast forward.
Which means that I have to half-press pause to make it play at the right speed.
Often times it gets unravelled so I have to get a pencil and wind it back up again.
Even then, it just doesn't play quite the same.
The quality gets poorer and poorer.
Unravelling more and more frequent.
Sometimes I can't find the pencil and I have to use my finger.
And I continue to play it, even though the vast majority of the content I hate or am 'meh' about.
Playing on fast forward.
Half paused.
A damaged tape.
I don't even like that much.
HELLO!?
I even usesd too much punctuation there, so you can bet that I am having a premier-league-AHA-epiphany
So what would it take?
And why the feck would anyone continue in such a panicked state of chaotic mediocrity?
Good flamin question.
Well, I could bin the tape. But it's the only tape I have.
And I do like some of the songs.
So, bin the tape, re-make the tape. That's right - take the time to re-make the mix tape.
But for God's sakes leave out the songs that you don't like.
Infact, let me reframe that - only include songs that you like.
How about that?
How about that indeed.
Create a play list. That would involve learning how to use Itunes.
Maybe you even need to buy your favorite songs.
Invest in them.
Or buy some new CDs. Burn a CD. Learn how to burn a CD. Download software that will help you burn a CD. Perhaps even buy it.
Go out and buy some CDs.
Borrow some.
Join your local library and see if they have some.
Try some new music.
Ask for recommendations from friends.
Maybe you could learn how to play an instrument. Invest that time and money.
Go to live concerts.
Watch Youtube.
The options are endless.
But they take investment.
Of time.
And money.
And energy.
And focus.
And planning.
And so very often, that just seems too much.
So we do the same old same old, expending time and energy on damaged, unecessary, unhelpful familiarity; complaining, questioning, burning out.
Fast forward.
Pause.
Mediocrity.
Unravel.
Fix.
Repeat.
